Okay, I admit it...lots of things make me chuckle. I may not be fat, but I sure can be a jolly guy. One of the things of late that really makes me chuckle is how bent out of shape bloggers get over their themes. Which one to choose? It's like they're deciding what coffin to pick for their funeral. Well, hopefully, this article will put the "theme choosing process" into perspective. Believe it or not, the theme you choose for your blog is not a matter of life and death and ultimately, the only thing that matters is how well it functions for what YOU want it to do.
So what's a theme? A theme is how your blog will look. With Blogger, you're pretty limited as to your choices. With WordPress...it's a whole other story. There are more WordPress themes than Carter has liver pills. And trust me, he has tons of them. If you go through the free WordPress themes directory, you'll find thousands of them. So what to choose?
Let me make this very simple for you. A lot of bloggers get hung up on what the theme looks like, such as its color, design, and so on. When it comes to appearance, what's nice is purely subjective. If you think you're going to choose a theme that everybody is going to love, you're crazy. There are going to be visitors who will love your theme and there will be visitors who will hate your theme...and everything in between. Trying to find a theme that will please everybody is like trying to find a girl who will...oh never mind.
What IS important is not how the theme looks but how it functions for what YOU want to do with your blog. For example, if you know that you're going to need three columns to be able to display the content of your blog a certain way, then you need to get a three column theme. A two column one, no matter how bright and shiny, isn't going to do the job for you. It's that simple.
Now, having said that, there are some basic theme choices that you will probably want to consider as far as color. if your blog is on a cheery topic, you probably want a theme with bright colors. If your blog is on the topic of death, you probably want a theme that has some black in it. Use a little common sense in this area. But other than that, just about anything can go.
Okay, don't get hung up on what your theme looks like. Just make sure it does what it's supposed to do.
