Whenever you try to to get more visitors to your site, you need to determine both your starting point and your end point. Much like when you start off on a road trip, you have a starting point and you need to know your end point so you know you've reached your goal.
First, figure out where you are. Take the time to look at you web stats, either from awstats or Google Analytics, or whatever package you are currently using. How many visitors do you get per day? Do you get more visitors on Monday or on Saturday? Do you get your visitors in the morning or the evening? what pages are they looking at? answer these questions before you start off on your campaign.
Second, once you determine your start point, then set off the goal that you want to reach. Do you want to double your visits? Double your sales? Do you have some other goal in mind? Do you just want to improve your rankings in the search engine results?
The third thing that you need to do is come up with a plan of action, and then execute the plan. Do you need more inbound links? Do you know what keywords you are actually targeting? Are you targeting the words that you think you are?
There are many online tools that you can use to help you every step of the way. Some tools are free, others are not. You may need to consider hiring someone to point the way for you.
Regardless of the tool that you use, you need to measure both your start point and your progress so that you know when you've reached your destination. Web analytics is an indispensable part of owning and running a successful website.
